“Too Loud, Lily!”
That’s what Riley says every time she hears a loud noise, while covering her ears with her hands. It’s from a book she has where a rhinoceros (Lily) is too loud for everyone and they keep saying ‘Too Loud, Lily!’ Anyway, it’s stuck. It doesn’t seem to apply to her being loud. But she is extremely sensitive to the sounds of the front door opening ‘Scary!’, the sound of the blender/coffee machine ‘noisy!’, the vacuum cleaner ‘too loud!’ and even to light and dark.
Josh took her to the Reptile Park a few weeks ago and apparently, despite her enthusiasm for snakes, she refused to go into any of the inside areas ‘it’s dark in there!’. She says the same thing everytime we go into the car park. And even the light on in the bathroom in the morning is enough to wake her up.
She becomes distressed when a toy (or a person) won’t be quiet, once she has expressed her wish for them to be so. If a harsh ‘shhh!’ doesn’t work with a toy a tantrum often ensues. And if it’s a person, the shhh! just becomes more and more insistent and she becomes more and more anxious. It’s the same with hearing babies or children cry. She can hear a cry from what seems like a mile away.
It’s hard to say how much of it is actual sensitivity and how much of it is normal toddler stuff. Because, well, I only have one toddler so I don’t really have a point of reference. It does go the other way too, as sensitive as she is to sensory stimulation, she also really enjoys it. So there’s nothing she loves more than a belly rub at bedtime. Or a scalp massage, or a light tickle on her hands.
