NaNoWriMo or Mission Impossible?

by Zoey @ Good Googs on October 27, 2009

I’ve done it. I’ve committed to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

Reading

For the uninitiated this means that I will be attempting to write an entire novel in November (50,000 words / 175 pages).

I’ve done the math. This is 1,667 words per day or 100 words for every waking hour of November. Needless to say quality will be sacrificed for volume. I can only hope that Riley and her teeth allow me at least some time in the evening otherwise I’ll be seriously screwed.

I also don’t have a solid idea for a novel at this point. I have an opening scene in my head that has been rattling around in there for years. This is how my writing generally goes – it writes me, not the other way around.

While the whole thing is incredibly daunting it’s good to violate the inner perfectionist every now and then.

So far suggestions for genre have been:

1) Steampunk – I had to Google it. Never heard of it before. Not sure if this makes me old, geeky, out of the loop or all of the above. Not sure how I’d go with this – I’m much more of a fantasy boffin than a sci-fi one. Although incidentally the most glowing book review I’ve ever read was about a sci-fi novel where they said the author had ‘rewired science fiction. Everything is different now’. How awesome would it be to have written something that inspired that kind of sentiment?

2) Urban Fantasy Horror Romance – I smell a vampire story there.

All suggestions are welcome! Please comemnt and leave your nominations for genre . . .
