In Honour of Book Week

I was inspired by SquiggleMum to write a post about book week.

I have been reading to my little one since she was still in the womb and she has been lucky to have an Aunt with a real love for books who has gives her more books with every visit.

Riley loves Scarface Claw with a passion that I can barely fathom. It may be because it is about a cat and we have a cat Morgan who she is constantly trying to kiss and cuddle. Whatever the reason, I think I will soon need to replace the book because it is so well worn now.

Another one that always brings a smile to her face before we have even begun to read it is Sometimes I Like To Curl Up in a Ball.

And while she will not point to her feet/eyes/nose if you ask her she will wander around the house until she finds Where Is The Green Sheep? if you ask her to.

One of the best books I’ve read on reading to children is Reading Magic. One of the main recommendations is that you read three books to your child every day which can be a great addition to any night time routine. Some of the more surprising treasures divulged in the book are that:

1. Einstein recommended the reading of fairy tales if you wanted your child to be smarter

2. The role of a parent is very different to the role of a teacher in terms of learning to read.

3. You should never read your child a story that you aren’t into (it is for this reason that my husband never reads the Guess How Much I Love You books. I love them, but he doesn’t get them)

4. Fair warning about what you read – Mem Fox read to her daughter about Paris and managed to instill a love of France resulting in her daughter living on the other side of the world.

Happy reading everyone!

Some great titles in this post Zoey (we’re into Slinky Malinki at the moment…) And I’m a big fan of Mem’s advice on reading. As a teacher turned mum, I love that you mentioned point 2. So important!

… and boy – the involvement by the reading parents is such a boon for the teacher! – in so many ways!
