Riley’s hair is finally long and thick enough that a clip will stay in. Momentous. Really. Hair is a big deal. It’s a big part of why she looks like a little girl and not a baby. And also will probably mean that people will stop referring to her as a ‘he’. Unfortunately I’m sure that this means that she’ll have thick, unruly hair. It’s in the family.
I’ve always had a lot of hair. I’ve had comments like “It’s so lovely and thick” for a very long time now. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. And please, people with straight hair? Stop saying you want curly/wavy/thick hair. You don’t. Trust me. I can count all the good hair days I’ve had on one hand. Hint: I don’t have them without professional help.
It’s not a purely superficial thing. Hair is as much of an expression of personality as anything else. Ok it’s a little superficial. And I like the expression of my hair permanently straightened, back when I could still afford it.
I fear for my daughter. I really do.
