Zoey… thank you so much for this article…I have been struggling with perfectionism for all of my life. It has handicapped me in so many ways. I can’t stand for something to leave my office, computer, etc. without being totally perfect, spell checked, etc. Although it is beautiful and something I can be proud of when it leaves my hands… no one else gives a crap AND customers are typically somewhat miffed cause I have sent it out in the nick of time or whaaay too late. I have only realized lately… like my husband talked to me about it this morning after I did not get something out yesterday… that perfectionism really is a problem.

I can so identify with several things you said in this article and realize now why I do them. I will also add that I procrastinate BADLY because I know that I will work on it forever if I start working on it early. So I put things off till I can barely get them done… hoping everything goes 100% perfect and drivng myself nuts in the process.

Keep up the good work… I have been following you on twitter for some time now.

      Hi Charity!

It’s always great to hear from a fellow perfectionist ;o) You could always start with something non-work related to practice your reformed perfectionism on. Like not doing a very thorough job of vacuuming. Whatever you do, trust me you can turn it around. If I can, anyone can.

    Zoey,

Great post and timely for me. I do well as a recovering perfectionist, but I just moved into a “new” house–built in 1949, with lots of nicks and dings, but I love it. Still a new house is an emotional minefield at times. Your post reminded me about keeping perspective. Gave you a shout-out on my blog:
