This month I’m in a partnership with GreenKiddie. They’ll be featuring some of my blog posts on their website, and in this post I’ll be featuring an interview with the creator, Natliya Deleva. This isn’t a sponsored post, although I did win a prize through GreenKiddie’s competition here. It seemed like a great month to focus on green issues. It is the theme this month in the Carnival of Natural Parenting, and it’s probably something that I could focus on more – I’ve talked about my successes and failures in being green here.
The founder, Nataliya is a mother of a lovely 2-year-old girl, living in West London. A blogger, ex-journalist, present marketing professional and passionate about changing things for the better. You can follow her on Twitter here. She gives us all a little background on her site:
GreenKiddie is online space, providing information about “green” and natural care for babies and children.
Every mother wants to give her child the best start in live and we are here to support you in doing so. Our philosophy is simple – we all want the best for our children, but we are sometimes confused about what is best really.
GreenKiddie is all about providing friendly environment for parents to share thoughts and seek advice on how to embrace the idea of natural and “green” parenting.
We empower mums to make informed choices for their family by offering a unique balance between expert guidance and practical “green” tips from real mums. At GreenKiddie we believe that providing a “green”, natural care for your baby and toddler is best for your child, and it’s also great for the environment.
What gave you the inspiration to start GreenKiddie?
GreenKiddie started as a hobby – something I wanted to do while I was on my maternity leave. The initial idea was to start as a site about treating eczema in babies and children naturally. My daughter, a baby then, suffered from severe eczema and food allergies, which after 5 months conventional treatment without any success, finally managed to get under control through homeopathy and my home-made baby cosmetics. Inspired by the quick and effective way of treating it completely naturally, I thought of creating a site to help other mothers in a similar situation. The idea evaluated though and at the end I’ve developed a much more complex website, touching every aspect of an eco-friendly and natural baby and children’s’ care.
What did you hope to achieve by starting GreenKiddie?
First of all to show other mums that “natural parenting” is not some fancy expression, but something easy-achievable, which will do good for both kids and the environment. There are lost of parenting sites out there, but only a few of them focus on this niche. I also wanted to share easy and cost-effective ways to look after kids.
What surprised you the most after you started the site?
What surprised me most was the fact that there was not even one similar website on eco-parenting in the UK, while there were loads on other countries like USA or Canada, for instance. Quite often eco-friendly and natural is a synonym of expensive hence not affordable for families on a small budget, which made me even more passionate to put every effort to prove the opposite. Also, considering parents would do their best for their kids, harming in a long-term your precious little one by exposing him/her to toxins where there is a safer option, is just not acceptable, I think. However, observing mums, reading GreenKiddie and participating in the conversations we start on the blog, twitter or Facebook, I believe the attitude is now starting to change towards much more “green” parenting efforts.
If you could tell people three things about natural care for babies and children, what would they be?
Natural care for babies and children is essential, if you want the best for your kids, because it’s safe, it’s affordable (and sometimes even cheaper), and it helps you educate your kids to respect the environment by going closer to nature. – Just think of the wooden toys, worm to touch, of the home-made play-dough, which you can make in seconds but will not worry if some of it goes to your toddler’s mouth, or the natural baby oils, the gentlest option for the sensitive baby skin.
What advice would you have for people wanting to start a website or a blog?
If you have a passion for it, have something interesting to say, and can go a few weeks with some very little sleep, then do it! Being insomniac, an adventurous person and a thinker is key for me.
What blogs do you most like to read?
I like reading challenging and provocative blogs which will make me thing and ask myself questions. Apart from parenting blog which I read with my first cup of coffee in the morning, I also like blogs on marketing and social media, so I can stay on top of the industry trends and adopt some of them for GreenKiddie as well.
What should people look out for on GreenKiddie in the future?
It is still under consideration, but I am thinking of integrating the community spirit by developing a GreenKiddie networking community, where mums to be able to share their blog posts, thought and ideas about their natural and eco-friendly parenting efforts.
Any other bloggers interested in being interviewed contact me here. Seriously. Do it.
Now over to you everyone! What are your best tips for being green? Or what do you really struggle with? Also feel free to post any questions for Nataliya.
